Abram and Sarah Have a Baby

God’s Word for Children

Genesis 15:1-6 and 21:1-3

Scripture:

After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision:

“Do not be afraid, Abram.
    I am your shield,[a]
    your very great reward.[b]

But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit[c] my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.”

Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.” He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring[d] be.”

Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.

Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him. Abraham gave the name Isaac[a] to the son Sarah bore him.

Lesson: Can you count all the stars in the sky?  Probably not, because there are too many to count.  In our Bible story today, we meet a man who wanted to have a son.  He talked to God about that, and when God answered, He told the man to look at the stars in the sky.He promised the man a large family.  God keeps His promises, and the man in our story learned that for himself.

The old man’s name was Abram.  He was almost 100 years old and thought he was too old to become a father.  God promised that He would make a big nation grow from Abram’s family, even though he didn’t have any children.  He took Abram outside at night to look at all the stars.  He promised that one day, Abram’s family would have as many people as the number of stars in the sky.  That is a lot of stars!  That is a big family! Abram believed what God said.  After a year he and his wife had a baby boy, just as God had promised.  They were so happy.  They named him Isaac.

God loves you, just like He loved Abram.  He will take care of you and He has a plan for your life, too.  Just like Abram, you can trust what God says.  He is good and He loves you very much.
